HOME ECONOMICS STAFF:

Mrs D Findlay – Principal Teacher

Mrs F Mitchell

Our aim is to provide the highest quality of learning and teaching for all our pupils and we are continually looking for ways to raise achievement.  The focused work of the department is based around encouraging good practice in design, planning and preparation, and carrying out practical activities. Pupils work with both food and fabric in S1 and 2 and then specialize in food in S3-6.

The purpose of Home Economics is to prepare young people in certain important skills of living as individuals and of establishing and developing a stable environment for their families. Home Economics encompasses studies of many of the processes which equip pupils to become responsible citizens and confident individuals.

Home Economics involves a study of a number of areas of knowledge and experience - technological, scientific, creative, aesthetic and social. The disciplined study of the interrelationships of these areas is one of the major contributions of the subject to the curriculum.

Home Economics offers pupils opportunities to develop technological capability. They learn how to meet identified human needs through appropriate selection and skilful use of resources, including technological equipment.  This enables pupils to become successful learners and effective contributors.

A variety of courses are offered in both S3/4 and S5/6 including Standard Grade, Intermediate 1 and 2 Hospitality, Skills for Work Early Education and Childcare and Higher Health and Food Technology. The Department has good links with the local community and enjoy two way visits giving the pupils high level, real experiences to base their studying on.
