Partnership With Parents
The education of children does not start on their first day at school. They have learned a great deal about their world, how to play, to talk and to get along with other people from family and friends.
From the first day of schooling, parents and teachers share in the education of children. We believe that children will progress more rapidly if parents continue to be involved in their education. Family outings, youth organisations and life in the home and community all continue to help learning. We find parents are anxious to be involved in supporting children in their school work. You could show them you are interested in their school work by talking to them about their day at school. During the year we try to build the partnership with parents by inviting parents to observe and participate in the work of their child’s class.Enrolment will take place on two days in January. Notices regarding this are placed in newspapers by the Education Authority, and the Rector advises parents through Newsletters, Notices in local shops and the “Community News Magazine”.
The Deputy Head Teacher (Early Education) will answer any questions you may wish to ask and inform you of arrangements being made, eg. for you and your child to visit the school prior to them starting, in order to familiarise them with their classroom and teacher.
During the period up to the week before the October holiday they will spend the morning only in school 9.00 am - 12.24 pm. Arrangements must be made by you to collect them at this time. In previous years it has been found that a full day in school has been too taxing for very young children and a half day period helps them to settle better into their new environment.
The Curriculum
The curriculum in The Community School of Auchterarder has evolved from a considered evaluation of the educational needs of the Primary child. As far as possible, the various aspects of learning are linked by careful forward planning. Each stage is designed to ensure maximum progress in learning. They provide a framework round which the work of the school is developed. Through this approach we are attempting to respond to the needs of the individual child and to ensure a balance between the different areas of the curriculum
In the early stages, children learn through play activities which are structured by the teacher to promote a learning situation, eg sand and water help to develop mathematical concepts whilst allowing them tactile experience and encouraging social relationships. Further up the school language and mathematical games are available for the same reasons.
Television, video tapes and radio broadcasts are valuable teaching aids and are used where appropriate to enhance the curriculum. Computers are in regular use in all Primary classrooms.
Continuous assessment, including National Tests, is carried out by each class teacher throughout the year which enables a profile of attainment to be established. This continuous record is passed on to the next teacher each year.
